Stepping Into a New Season

I don’t have a clue what’s next—but together, I feel a support and connection I haven’t felt in a long time.

How do we go from prioritizing our kids to embracing a little selfishness and learning to thrive in a new way?

On Saturday morning, I shared a very vulnerable post on Instagram about being in my house alone for the first time in decades and not knowing what to do. I even asked, “What should I do on this first Saturday morning at home in forever?”

The responses poured in: take a walk in the woods, meet a friend for brunch, go to yoga, read (or actually finish!) a book, have a dance party, be still longer than is comfortable, pray, journal, learn a new recipe, paint by numbers…so many thoughtful, joyful suggestions.

Here’s what that reminded me:

  • We need community more than ever, and sharing—even on social media—can truly uplift.

  • Empty nesting is hard, but so many parents are out there feeling it, surviving it, and finding new joys, talents, and pleasures.

  • Thriving isn’t selfish—it’s simply choosing to prioritize your well-being with a new lens.

It also showed me that stepping into something new doesn’t have to be drastic. On Sunday, I declared a “No Screen Sunday,” then promptly looked up recipes, texted my kids, and watched Ellie’s soccer game abroad. I broke every rule—and yet I still spent less time on my device than on any Sunday in recent memory.

That’s the wisdom of this stage of life: laugh at what didn’t work, reflect, pivot, and try again.

In my work—helping others build holistic health habits—I preach the value of small, consistent steps: time blocking, setting boundaries, nourishing your body, and celebrating progress.

So I’m taking my own advice. I’ll walk in the woods. Browse the farmers market. Meet a friend for coffee. And I’ll give myself permission to slow down, explore, and prioritize well-being in new ways—without pressure.

Thank you, community, for leaning in with me. One small step at a time, I’m grateful for you.
